Lucy Roberts
Somatic and EMDR Psychotherapist
Hello and welcome to my profile.
I am an somatic integrative counsellor which means that I do not believe that one approach works for all and I utilize the knowledge I have to compliment your needs. I am passionate about my work and truly love helping people to release themselves from the crippling shame and negative beliefs that have accumulated over the years.
I have been a qualified psychotherapist since December 2018 and since then I have gone onto develop my skills, I completed a level 5 diploma in counselling children and young people in 2019-2020, I then got my accreditation in 2021. In 2022 I wanted to add more to my practice as I felt clients were 'stuck' with only talking therapy and from reading Bessel Van Der Kolk's book 'The body keeps the score' I was inspired to work more with the body. So I embarked on an intense year of somatic learning and took on a Level 7 (Post Graduate) Advanced Diploma in Neurosomatic Psychotherapy, this was accompanied by EMDR training and I qualified in 2022 as an EMDR Practitioner and in 2023 I gained my level 7 PGDip. Both of these course opened my heart and soul into how the body keeps hold of the trauma and unless we know how to 'name it to tame it' and essentially.....'feel it to heal it'. We will be stuck in a chronic and debilitating state of hyperarousal (agitation or restlessness) or hypoarousal (hopelessness). The body needs to know its safe to feel and ultimately come back into its window of tolerance where we can feel things without the need of being outside of this. If our nervous systems are always online this creates extra inflammation in the body and pain can arise as a consequence, also many diseases are caused as a result of too much stress / cortisol in the body.
I work with ages 10 to 100, my oldest client is 95 and has been with me 5 years. I offer open ended sessions and can tailor this to suit your needs, weekly sessions are recommended as the consitency is what the mind needs to create new neural pathways. If we keep doing what we always have we will get what we have always got. I work online and I use Bi-Lateral Base for EMDR functionality. EMDR has literally transformed my practice and I see many clients able to do things they believed they never could again. EMDR is amazing as you don't need to re-live the trauma, all that happens is you recall it and notice how it feels in the body and then the re-processing can begin. There are eight stages within the EMDR process and we work within a treatment plan which we set at the start of therapy. It is not like other talking therapies but there is talking involved. EMDR tracks the bodies sensations (which is the nervous system) using bi lateral stimulation (working with the left and right side of the brain) to re work trauma memories to feel 'safe now'. It doesn't erase the memory it takes the heat out from it so that it doesn't hold you back in the present.
I work with a lot of neurodiverse clients and have ADHD myself. I have learnt so much about this condition and Autism and believe it is essential for us to understand how our brains function so that we can allow space for it and find ways of managing the symptoms. Therefore I also have access to a system call QB check which is a new a revolutionary system that checks for likelihood of ADHD symptoms. The information from this report can be used to help form a treatment plan and although it isnt a formal diagnoses (which you can use it towards), it gives more clarity on how the brain functions which is amazing information in itself.
I believe that the relationship is paramount for the therapy to work and trust is imperative, therefore I offer a genuine, open, honest, safe, confidential and non-judgemental place for you. I am an accredited member of and abide by the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists code of ethics.
